Dental 3D Printer Calibration for Dimensional Accuracy

2024-04-10

Your printer passed the factory test — six months and 40 L of resin later, it may be 150 µm off and you would never know.

What drifts

LCD pixel shrinkage, build-plate levelling, and resin viscosity with temperature all move accuracy. A mis-levelled plate alone can tilt every layer by 0.1 mm across the build.

A 10-minute monthly check

  1. Print a calibration cube with known 10 mm edges and ±0.05 mm tolerances.
  2. Measure X/Y/Z with calipers; flag >0.1 mm deviation.
  3. Run the plate auto-level; re-home the Z.
  4. Log it — trends beat one-off checks.
If models come back from the mill 0.15 mm proud, calibrate the printer before blaming the design.

The AI Printing Series ships with a calibration routine and a printed artefact.

A 15-minute monthly routine

  1. Print a calibration cube with known 10 mm edges; measure with calipers to 0.01 mm.
  2. Check the Z-axis lead screw for backlash; a 0.1 mm layer slip shows as a tall part.
  3. Run an exposure test strip; the target grey is the one that just cures a 2 mm bar.
  4. Log it — a drift chart catches a failing screen before a case fails.

Read the numbers

Accept ≤50 µm on a 10 mm span for temporaries; tighten to ≤30 µm for surgical guides. Beyond that, the screen is due.
